Experiences That Bring Kenya to Life

Whitewater Rafting

The Tana River near Sagana offers some of East Africa’s most exciting whitewater rafting, with rapids ranging from playful to genuinely challenging depending on the section and water levels. Trips are led by trained safety kayakers and guides who brief paddlers thoroughly before setting off.

Rafts navigate a mix of fast rapids and calmer stretches, giving paddlers time to catch their breath and take in the surrounding forested riverbanks between bursts of adrenaline. Both half-day and full-day trips are available, suited to first-timers and experienced rafters alike.

It’s one of Kenya’s top adrenaline activities and a popular day trip from Nairobi for travellers wanting something more active than a standard safari day.

Scuba Diving in Kenya

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, off Kenya’s southern coast near Wasini Island, offers some of the country’s best diving, with healthy coral, strong visibility, and frequent dolphin sightings on the boat ride out. Dive sites suit a range of levels, from gentle reef dives to more dynamic drift dives.

PADI-certified dive centres run daily trips and courses, from introductory Discover Scuba sessions for first-timers to full certification for those wanting to dive independently. Divers regularly encounter turtles, reef sharks, moray eels, and vibrant reef fish.

Whether logging a first dive or exploring a well-known site again, Kenya’s southern reefs offer consistently rewarding underwater scenery.

Snorkeling in Kenya

The protected reefs of Watamu Marine National Park offer some of Kenya’s best snorkeling, with warm, clear water revealing coral gardens, parrotfish, angelfish, and the occasional turtle grazing on seagrass beds. Boat trips typically visit two or three sites suited to different experience levels.

No prior experience is necessary, as guides provide a safety briefing and equipment before entering the water. Shallow reef sections suit beginners, while deeper areas reward stronger swimmers with denser coral and more marine life.

Many snorkeling trips include a stop at a nearby sandbank or beach, rounding out a relaxed, colourful day on Kenya’s protected coastal waters.

Lamu Island Tour

Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, with no cars on its narrow streets and donkeys still serving as the main form of transport. A guided tour explores its coral-stone architecture, carved doors, and centuries-old mosques.

Beyond the old town, Lamu’s quieter beaches and mangrove channels offer a slower, more traditional coastal experience than Kenya’s busier resort areas. A dhow sail around the archipelago is a popular way to see the coastline and nearby islands like Manda and Shela.

With its unhurried pace and rich Swahili heritage, Lamu offers a distinctly different coastal experience from the rest of the Kenyan coast.

Diani Beach Experience

Diani Beach, with its powder-white sand and turquoise water backed by palm trees, is consistently ranked among Africa’s best beaches. Days here move at a relaxed pace, whether spent swimming in the calm, reef-protected shallows or simply walking the long, uncrowded shoreline.

Beyond sunbathing, Diani offers a full menu of coastal activities, from kite surfing and stand-up paddleboarding to glass-bottom boat trips over the coral reef just offshore. The nearby Colobus Conservation area protects the endangered Angolan colobus monkeys found in the surrounding forest.

With a good spread of beachfront restaurants and laid-back bars, Diani suits both active travellers and those simply looking to unwind on the Kenyan coast.

Maasai Village Visit in Kenya

A visit to a Maasai boma near the Mara offers a direct, respectful introduction to one of Kenya’s most recognisable communities. Hosts welcome guests with traditional songs and the adumu jumping dance, before explaining daily life centred on cattle herding and community structure.

Inside the village, visitors see how homes are built from mud, sticks, and cow dung, and learn about the beadwork and shuka cloth central to Maasai identity. Guests are usually invited to ask questions, try simple beadwork, or join a dance demonstration.

These visits are arranged in coordination with the community, with proceeds supporting the village directly, offering a genuine window into Maasai culture beyond the postcard image.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kenya Safaris

Lodges are permanent buildings with hotel-style rooms, often with pools and larger common areas. Tented camps offer canvas rooms with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms, set closer to the bush for a more immersive feel. Which one you get depends on the package — EATL mixes and matches lodges and camps to fit your budget and style.

Depending on distance, we use 4×4 safari vehicles for road transfers or light aircraft for longer hops between regions, such as from our base in Arusha to the Serengeti. We’ll recommend the right mix based on your route and time available.

Most packages include full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at the lodge or camp, along with park fees and game drives in that area. Drinks and extras like spa treatments are usually not included — we’ll spell out exactly what’s covered in your quote.

Yes, most of our itineraries can be adjusted to mid-range, luxury or exclusive camps and lodges. Let us know your budget and preferred style and we’ll suggest upgrades where they make the biggest difference.

This varies by park and property, but most of the camps and lodges we work with are positioned inside or right on the edge of the park, so game drives can start within minutes rather than hours.

Most properties have electricity, at least for part of the day, and many offer Wi-Fi in common areas. Coverage can be limited in more remote parks like the Serengeti — we’ll flag any properties with no connectivity in advance.

A road safari uses 4×4 vehicles to travel between parks, which lets you see the changing landscape but takes longer. A fly-in safari uses light aircraft for the longer legs, saving time so you can cover more parks in fewer days.

Yes — once we understand your budget, style and dates, we’ll put together a shortlist of camps and lodges for each stop on your route, and you choose the ones you’d like.

Airport transfers to your first camp or lodge are included in our safari packages. If you’re arriving on a separate itinerary, let us know your flight details and we’ll arrange the pickup.

We use 4×4 safari Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for unobstructed game viewing and photography, each with a dedicated driver-guide.
