Getting There

Road transfers from Nairobi or Samburu.

Shaba National Reserve lies in Kenya’s arid north, a rugged landscape of lava rock, acacia scrub and open plains along the Ewaso Nyiro River. Made well known internationally through Joy Adamson’s work with the lioness Elsa, the reserve retains a wilder, less-visited character than Kenya’s more famous parks.

The Ewaso Nyiro River draws wildlife throughout the dry landscape, supporting species adapted to Kenya’s arid north, including gerenuk, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra alongside more widespread plains game. Predators including lion and leopard are present, and the reserve’s quieter visitor numbers often mean more exclusive sightings.

Shaba is usually visited together with the neighbouring Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves, reached by road or light aircraft from Nairobi. Its striking volcanic scenery and low crowds make it a rewarding addition for travellers who have already experienced Kenya’s better-known parks.
