Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya is famous for one of Africa’s most photographed views: large herds of elephant moving across open plains with the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rising in the background across the border in Tanzania. The park’s swamps and seasonal lakes, fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro’s slopes, sustain wildlife even through the dry season.
Amboseli has been the site of long-running elephant research, and its herds are among the most studied and habituated in Africa, allowing close and reliable sightings. Alongside elephant, the park supports buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and a range of predators, with the flat terrain making game viewing straightforward across most of its habitats.
The park lies within a few hours’ drive of Nairobi and is often paired with the Maasai Mara or Tsavo as part of a wider Kenya safari. Maasai communities living around the park also offer opportunities for cultural visits alongside the wildlife viewing.
