Experiences That Tanzania to Life

Canoe Safaris

Canoeing across the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park offers a rare, quiet way to encounter wildlife from water level. Paddling slowly along the shoreline, it is common to spot hippos, giraffes drinking at the water’s edge, and a wide variety of waterbirds, including flamingos when the season is right.

Guides lead the canoes in small groups, keeping a safe distance from hippos and other animals while explaining the surrounding ecosystem. The still water and mountain backdrop, often including views of Mount Meru, make for a peaceful and scenic outing.

Canoe safaris typically run for one to two hours and pair naturally with a game drive elsewhere in the park.

Coffee Farm Tour

Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro region has grown coffee since the early 20th century, and a coffee farm tour near Moshi walks visitors through the full journey from bean to cup. Guides explain how shade-grown Arabica coffee is cultivated on the fertile volcanic slopes, alongside banana and other crops in traditional Chagga farming systems.

The tour typically covers picking, pulping, drying, and roasting, often using traditional hand tools still in use on smaller family farms. Guests get to roast beans over an open fire, grind them by hand, and taste the coffee they’ve just prepared.

It’s an informative, aromatic outing that pairs naturally with a waterfall hike or village visit in the Kilimanjaro foothills.

Game Drives

A game drive is the classic way to explore Tanzania’s national parks, taking you deep into the bush aboard a 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced local guide. Cruising along dusty tracks through the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Tarangire, you get close, safe encounters with lions, elephants, giraffes, and the many other species that call these ecosystems home.

Morning and afternoon drives each offer a different rhythm of the bush. Early starts catch predators finishing a night’s hunt while the light is soft and golden, while afternoon drives often reveal herds gathering at waterholes as the day cools. Your guide’s knowledge of animal behaviour and terrain makes every outing feel like a story unfolding in real time.

Game drives can be tailored to full-day outings or shorter half-day excursions, and are easily combined with picnic lunches in the bush. Whether you are chasing the Great Migration or simply hoping for a first glimpse of the Big Five, a game drive remains the heart of any Tanzanian safari.

Hadzabe Cultural Experience

Near Lake Eyasi live the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa, who still forage and hunt using traditional bow-and-arrow techniques passed down for generations. Joining a Hadzabe group at dawn for a morning hunt offers a rare window into a way of life that has changed little over thousands of years.

Guests walk alongside Hadzabe hunters through the bush, observing tracking skills, fire-making by friction, and the identification of edible roots, berries, and honey. The Hadzabe language, known for its distinctive click sounds, adds another layer of cultural depth to the encounter.

This experience is often combined with a visit to a nearby Datoga blacksmith community, giving a fuller picture of the varied cultures living around Lake Eyasi.

Maasai Village Visit

A visit to a Maasai boma offers a direct, respectful introduction to one of East Africa’s most recognisable communities. Guests are welcomed by villagers who share their traditions, from the adumu jumping dance to explanations of cattle-based livelihoods and the distinctive shuka cloth and beadwork worn daily.

Inside the village, hosts often demonstrate how homes are built from mud, sticks, and cow dung, and explain the social structure that organises daily life around herding and community decision-making. Visitors are usually invited to ask questions, try simple beadwork, or join a demonstration dance.

These visits are typically arranged in coordination with the community, with proceeds supporting the village directly. It is a meaningful way to understand Maasai culture beyond the images seen in photographs.

Nature Walks

Gentle nature walks through Tanzania’s highland forests and crater rims offer an easy way to appreciate the country’s plant life, birds, and smaller wildlife at a relaxed pace. Trails around areas like the Ngorongoro Highlands wind through montane forest, farmland, and viewpoints overlooking the crater floor far below.

Local guides point out medicinal plants, indigenous trees, and the birdlife that thrives in these cooler highland zones, offering a different perspective from the game-drive-focused lowland parks. The walks suit travellers of most fitness levels and require no special equipment.

These outings work well as a lighter day between more intensive safari activities, offering fresh air and closer contact with the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions On Tanzania

Lodges are permanent buildings with hotel-style rooms, often with pools and larger common areas. Tented camps offer canvas rooms with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms, set closer to the bush for a more immersive feel. Which one you get depends on the package — EATL mixes and matches lodges and camps to fit your budget and style.

Depending on distance, we use 4×4 safari vehicles for road transfers or light aircraft for longer hops between regions, such as from our base in Arusha to the Serengeti. We’ll recommend the right mix based on your route and time available.

Most packages include full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at the lodge or camp, along with park fees and game drives in that area. Drinks and extras like spa treatments are usually not included — we’ll spell out exactly what’s covered in your quote.

Yes, most of our itineraries can be adjusted to mid-range, luxury or exclusive camps and lodges. Let us know your budget and preferred style and we’ll suggest upgrades where they make the biggest difference.

This varies by park and property, but most of the camps and lodges we work with are positioned inside or right on the edge of the park, so game drives can start within minutes rather than hours.

Most properties have electricity, at least for part of the day, and many offer Wi-Fi in common areas. Coverage can be limited in more remote parks like the Serengeti — we’ll flag any properties with no connectivity in advance.

A road safari uses 4×4 vehicles to travel between parks, which lets you see the changing landscape but takes longer. A fly-in safari uses light aircraft for the longer legs, saving time so you can cover more parks in fewer days.

Yes — once we understand your budget, style and dates, we’ll put together a shortlist of camps and lodges for each stop on your route, and you choose the ones you’d like.

Airport transfers to your first camp or lodge are included in our safari packages. If you’re arriving on a separate itinerary, let us know your flight details and we’ll arrange the pickup.

We use 4×4 safari Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for unobstructed game viewing and photography, each with a dedicated driver-guide.
