Ways to Experience East Africa

Six ways to experience East Africa, from river to sky to savanna floor.

Wildlife & Safari

Walking Safaris

A walking safari puts you directly into the landscape, on foot and led by an armed ranger alongside a knowledgeable guide. Away from the sound of an engine, you notice details that a vehicle safari can miss: animal tracks, bird calls, medicinal plants, and the small creatures that keep the ecosystem running.

Walks are paced for safety and discovery, moving quietly through areas known for good sightings while keeping a respectful distance from larger animals. Guides explain the signs of recent wildlife activity, from fresh dung to broken branches, turning the bush into an open book.

Most walking safaris last two to three hours and suit travellers who want a slower, more immersive connection to nature. It’s an excellent complement to a vehicle-based safari, offering a grounded, sensory perspective on Tanzania’s wilderness.

Sky

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

A hot air balloon safari offers one of the most memorable ways to experience Tanzania’s spectacular wilderness. As the sun rises, drift quietly above the vast Serengeti plains and watch the landscape come alive below. From the peaceful height of the balloon, you can admire winding rivers, golden grasslands, woodland areas, and wildlife moving freely across the wilderness.

Unlike a traditional game drive, a balloon safari gives you a completely different perspective of the African landscape. The silence of the flight allows you to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Serengeti while enjoying uninterrupted panoramic views. Depending on the location and season, you may see elephants, giraffes, buffalo, antelope, zebras, wildebeest, and other wildlife from above.

The experience begins before sunrise, with an early morning transfer to the launch site. After a safety briefing, you board the balloon and slowly rise into the morning sky. The changing colours of the sunrise create exceptional opportunities for photography, while the calm flight provides a peaceful contrast to the excitement of a traditional safari.

Hot air balloon safaris are particularly popular in the Serengeti, where the endless plains provide an extraordinary setting for an aerial adventure. During the Great Migration, the experience can become even more spectacular as thousands of wildebeest and other animals move across the plains below.

Cultural Experiences

Hadzabe Cultural Experience

Near Lake Eyasi live the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa, who still forage and hunt using traditional bow-and-arrow techniques passed down for generations. Joining a Hadzabe group at dawn for a morning hunt offers a rare window into a way of life that has changed little over thousands of years.

Guests walk alongside Hadzabe hunters through the bush, observing tracking skills, fire-making by friction, and the identification of edible roots, berries, and honey. The Hadzabe language, known for its distinctive click sounds, adds another layer of cultural depth to the encounter.

This experience is often combined with a visit to a nearby Datoga blacksmith community, giving a fuller picture of the varied cultures living around Lake Eyasi.

Zanzibar & Beach

Sunset Dhow Cruise

A sunset dhow cruise is a relaxed way to end a day on Zanzibar, sailing aboard a traditional wooden dhow as the sky turns shades of orange and pink over the Indian Ocean. These boats, largely unchanged in design for centuries, still carry a distinct grace under sail.

Most cruises include fresh fruit, drinks, and sometimes a light seafood snack, while the crew handles the sailing so guests can simply enjoy the view. Depending on the route, dolphins are occasionally spotted, and the calm evening waters make for excellent photography.

It’s a quiet, scenic finish to a day of exploring, well suited to couples, families, or anyone wanting to unwind on the water.

Adventure Activities

Canoe Safaris

Canoeing across the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park offers a rare, quiet way to encounter wildlife from water level. Paddling slowly along the shoreline, it is common to spot hippos, giraffes drinking at the water’s edge, and a wide variety of waterbirds, including flamingos when the season is right.

Guides lead the canoes in small groups, keeping a safe distance from hippos and other animals while explaining the surrounding ecosystem. The still water and mountain backdrop, often including views of Mount Meru, make for a peaceful and scenic outing.

Canoe safaris typically run for one to two hours and pair naturally with a game drive elsewhere in the park.

We made an amazing cultural daytrip from Arusha to the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes with Eatl. Booked only short in advance they went out of their way to accommodate us. Special thanks to Manate and Babu who drove us around all day. They were so nice and funny and knowledgeable. It was a long journey but so interesting. Not only to meat the tribes, men and women, and see their traditional way of living, incredibly lovely people, but also to see the countryside and the villages along the way. Thank you Eatle; Thank you Manate and Babu. Karl and Marleen from Belgium.

EATL tour group was the reason I had the best Safari ever. My tour guides (Babuu & Manase) made It such a fun and education experience. They even went out of their way to help my wife find the perfect tanzanite ring in between our safari adventures. I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with this company. From prompt response times in the planning process to the completly customizing the safari to our needs- everything was amazing. I never thought I would leave, ready to come back- but I will definitely be revisiting and booking with EATL again!

We had the time of our lives exploring Tanzania and going on the best wildlife safari across the Serengeti and Lake Manyara. We had the best guide ever - Michael. He was so professional and great at his job. He drove us across 4 days in the most safest manner. He knew the spots of where we can see the animals. We felt very safe in his supervision as he really knew what he was doing. Everything about the trip was well planned including all the lodges we stayed at, and their pricing was very reasonable. Thank you EATL for an amazing trip and Michael is the best guide to go with when booking with this operator.

The best tour operator EVER We had a life time and memorable experience touring the serengeti and lake manyara organised by EATL. If you are looking to explore Tanzania - EATL is your go to company. They are 10000% professional. Everything was well planned from airport pick up to the 4 day game drive we had across the serengeti. We had the best guide with us - Michael. Ask for him to be your guide. He really knows his job well. We had the best game drive with him. His driving skills are phenomenal, and he took us to all the hide spots so we got to see a wide variety of wild life. Its as if he knows the serengeti by heart. The lodges we stayed at were also wonderful. Thank you guys for such a great experience.
