Watamu sits on Kenya’s coast north of Mombasa, a small town known for its exceptionally clear water and the marine national park that protects the coral reefs just offshore. Snorkelling and diving here reveal some of the healthiest coral formations on the Kenyan coast, along with a wide variety of tropical fish.
The area is also a significant site for sea turtle conservation, with local organisations working to protect nesting green and hawksbill turtles along the beaches, and visitors can sometimes take part in monitoring or hatchling releases. Mangrove creeks nearby add a further ecosystem to explore, reached by boat trips from the town.
Watamu is reached by road from Mombasa or by flight to nearby Malindi, and its combination of strong marine conservation and quieter beaches make it a good choice for travellers interested in the ocean environment rather than a busier resort scene.
