Nairobi National Park is one of the few places in the world where wildlife roams within sight of a capital city’s skyline, its open plains bordering the southern edge of Nairobi itself. Lion, giraffe, buffalo and a healthy population of both black and white rhino can be seen against a backdrop of high-rise buildings in the distance.
Because the park has no fence along its southern boundary, wildlife moves freely between the park and the wider Athi-Kaputiei plains, following the same migratory patterns their ancestors have followed for generations. This connection to a larger ecosystem sustains a genuine diversity of species despite the park’s location on a major city’s doorstep.
Located a short drive from central Nairobi, the park makes an easy half-day safari for travellers with a stopover in the capital or limited time before or after a longer trip elsewhere in Kenya. It offers a convenient introduction to African wildlife without leaving the city.
