Tsavo West National Park sits alongside its larger sibling, Tsavo East, but offers a markedly different landscape of volcanic hills, lava flows and denser vegetation. Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear underground water bubbles up through volcanic rock, is one of the park’s signature sites, with an underwater viewing chamber offering close views of hippo and fish.
The park’s varied terrain includes rocky outcrops, riverine forest and open plains, supporting a wide range of wildlife including elephant, lion, leopard and a fenced rhino sanctuary established to protect the species from poaching. Views from vantage points such as Poacher’s Lookout stretch across much of the park toward Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day.
Tsavo West lies within reach of both Nairobi and the Kenyan coast, making it a practical link between an inland safari and a beach stay at Diani or Mombasa. Its varied scenery gives it a different character to the more open plains of Tsavo East.
