Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley, its calm waters home to hippo, crocodile and one of the richest concentrations of birdlife in the country, with several hundred species recorded around its shores. Unlike the nearby soda lakes, Baringo’s fresh water supports fishing communities who have lived along its edge for generations.
Boat trips are the main way to explore the lake, offering close views of hippo pods, fish eagles and the small islands scattered across the water, some inhabited by local communities. The surrounding Rift Valley scenery, with distant hills and volcanic features, adds further depth to a visit centred on the lake itself.
Lake Baringo is reached by road from Nairobi through the Rift Valley and pairs naturally with nearby Lake Bogoria, together offering a quieter, less-visited alternative to Kenya’s better-known southern lakes.
