Lake Bogoria is a soda lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley, known for its geothermal activity, with hot springs and small geysers bubbling along parts of the shoreline where underground volcanic heat reaches the surface. The lake’s alkaline water regularly attracts large flocks of flamingo, drawn by the algae that thrive in its warm, mineral-rich conditions.
Steep escarpment walls rise sharply along the lake’s edge, giving Bogoria a more dramatic, enclosed feel than some of the flatter Rift Valley lakes nearby. Walking trails near the hot springs allow visitors to get close to the steaming vents, a rare and striking sight within a Kenyan national reserve.
Reached by road through Kenya’s Rift Valley, Lake Bogoria is often visited alongside nearby Lake Baringo, giving travellers a combination of geothermal scenery and flamingo viewing on a route less travelled than the country’s more famous lakes.
