Getting There

Flights or road transfers from Nairobi.

Samburu National Reserve lies in Kenya’s arid north, a rugged landscape along the Ewaso Nyiro River known for a distinctive set of wildlife species adapted to dry conditions and found nowhere else in the country’s more famous southern parks. Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and gerenuk, together known as the Samburu Special Five, are among the reserve’s signature sightings.

The river itself is the reserve’s lifeline, drawing elephant, crocodile and a wide range of birdlife to its banks throughout the year, while the surrounding dry bush supports healthy populations of lion and leopard. The Samburu people, whose culture and dress share some similarities with the Maasai, live around the reserve and offer opportunities for cultural visits.

Samburu is reached by road or light aircraft from Nairobi and is typically combined with the neighbouring Buffalo Springs and Shaba reserves. Its distinct wildlife and striking scenery make it a strong addition for travellers who have already visited Kenya’s southern parks.
