Aberdare National Park protects a range of forested mountains and high moorland in central Kenya, its cool climate and dense vegetation giving it a character quite different from the open plains typically associated with a Kenya safari. Waterfalls cascade through the forest, and viewpoints along the park’s higher reaches look out across a landscape rarely seen by visitors focused only on the Mara or Amboseli.
The park is known for its tree hotels, lodges built on stilts or platforms overlooking floodlit waterholes, where elephant, buffalo, and occasionally the shy bongo antelope, can be observed after dark. Daytime game drives through the forest and moorland reveal a mix of species adapted to the cooler, wetter highland environment.
Reached by road from Nairobi and central Kenya, Aberdare is often visited as a distinct add-on to a wider itinerary, offering forest scenery and a different style of wildlife viewing centred around its floodlit waterholes rather than open-plain game drives.
