The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most famous wildlife destination, an extension of the Serengeti ecosystem across the Tanzanian border and the setting for the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration each year. Open grassland stretching to the horizon supports year-round populations of lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant alongside the migrating herds.
Between roughly July and October, huge numbers of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in search of fresh grazing, drawing crocodiles and predators to the water’s edge in one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife spectacles. Outside migration season, the reserve remains one of the most reliable places in Africa for big cat sightings, supported by the density and habituation of its resident wildlife.
The Mara is reached by road or a short flight from Nairobi, and Maasai communities living around the reserve offer cultural visits alongside the wildlife viewing. It remains the centrepiece of most Kenya safari itineraries, whether visited during the migration or at another time of year.
