Getting There

A short drive from Arusha.

Tarangire National Park lies a short drive south of Arusha and is known for its dramatic baobab-studded landscape and the seasonal concentration of wildlife along the Tarangire River. During the dry months the river becomes one of the few permanent water sources in the area, drawing large herds of elephant along with buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and a wide range of plains game.

The park’s mix of open grassland, swamps and dense woodland supports an unusually high diversity of habitats for its size, and its baobab trees, some centuries old, give the scenery a character quite different from the flatter plains of the Serengeti. Birdlife is abundant, with over 500 recorded species, making Tarangire a favourite for keen birdwatchers as well as photographers drawn to its elephant herds.

Because of its proximity to Arusha, Tarangire is often the first or last stop on a northern circuit safari, easily paired with Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Its quieter game-viewing atmosphere compared to the busier parks makes it a good choice for travellers who prefer a slower pace.
