Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Zanzibar, known for some of the island’s clearest water and a long stretch of white sand that stays firm and swimmable regardless of the tide, unlike many beaches further south. It has grown into one of Zanzibar’s most developed resort areas, with a wide choice of hotels, dive centres and beachfront restaurants.
The surrounding reefs make Nungwi a popular base for snorkelling and diving, while sunset dhow cruises along the coast have become one of the area’s signature evening activities. A working boatyard near the village, where traditional dhows are still built by hand, offers a glimpse of local maritime tradition alongside the tourist infrastructure.
Nungwi lies about an hour by road from Zanzibar’s airport and is typically chosen by travellers wanting a fuller resort experience after a mainland safari. Its reliable swimming conditions make it a popular choice for families as well as couples.
