Bagamoyo is a historic coastal town north of Dar es Salaam that once served as one of East Africa’s most important trading ports, its name reflecting the town’s difficult past as a departure point along regional trade routes. Weathered German colonial buildings, an old fort and a caravanserai still line its streets, remnants of a period when Bagamoyo was a major commercial and administrative centre.
The town’s Catholic mission, among the oldest in East Africa, and its old Arab quarter add further layers to a walk through Bagamoyo’s history, while the working fishing harbour keeps the town connected to a livelihood little changed over generations. A small museum and several historic sites give context to the town’s role in regional trade and history.
Located about two hours north of Dar es Salaam by road, Bagamoyo is often visited as a half or full day trip from the capital, appealing to travellers with an interest in East African history and colonial-era architecture.
