Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible southern circuit parks, reached in a few hours by road from Dar es Salaam and often described as a smaller echo of the Serengeti’s open plains. Its Mkata floodplain provides expansive grassland where elephant, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe gather in open view of the road.
Lion prides are frequently seen resting in the grass or patrolling the plains, and the relatively compact size of the park makes game drives efficient without long distances between sightings. Mikumi’s mix of savannah, woodland and low hills also supports strong birdlife, adding variety for visitors staying more than a day.
Its proximity to Dar es Salaam makes Mikumi a practical option for a short safari without a flight, and it is often combined with a visit to the nearby Udzungwa Mountains for travellers wanting to add a forest and hiking element to their trip.
