Mafia Island lies south of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean, a quieter and far less developed island best known for its marine life rather than its beaches alone. Warm currents bring whale sharks close to shore between October and March, making Mafia one of the most reliable places in the world to snorkel alongside these gentle giants.
The surrounding waters form part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, protecting extensive coral reefs that support a wide range of fish, turtles and other marine species. With far fewer visitors than Zanzibar, the island retains an unhurried, low-key atmosphere across its beaches, fishing villages and small lodges.
Mafia is reached by domestic flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, and its focus on diving and marine conservation makes it a strong choice for travellers prioritising underwater experiences over nightlife or resort amenities.
