Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar City, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose narrow streets, coral-stone buildings and carved wooden doors reflect centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European influence. Winding alleyways open onto small squares, mosques, churches and old merchant houses that together tell the story of the island’s role as a major trading centre.
The old fish market and Forodhani Gardens come alive in the evening with street food stalls, while sites such as the former slave market and the Palace Museum offer a more sobering look at the island’s history. Spice tours and dhow cruises departing from the harbour give visitors further ways to engage with Zanzibar’s trading past.
Stone Town serves as the main gateway to Zanzibar, close to the airport and ferry terminal, and is usually explored over a day or two before heading to the island’s beaches. Its dense layering of history makes it one of the most culturally rich stops on a Tanzania itinerary.
