Lake Manyara National Park sits at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, a compact park where dense groundwater forest, open grassland and the shallow soda lake itself create a striking variety of habitats in a small area. The park is best known for its tree-climbing lions, a local behaviour rarely seen elsewhere in Africa.
Large elephant herds move through the forest and woodland margins, while the lake itself, when water levels allow, attracts thousands of flamingos along with pelicans and other waterbirds. The variety of habitats packed into Manyara’s relatively small size means the scenery and wildlife change noticeably over a short game drive.
Positioned between Arusha and the Serengeti, Lake Manyara is a natural stop on the way to or from Ngorongoro Crater, often visited in a single day. Its birdlife and distinctive lion behaviour make it a worthwhile addition even on a shorter northern circuit safari.
