Getting There

Flights and road connections reach western Tanzania.

Lake Tanganyika stretches along Tanzania’s western border, one of the longest and deepest freshwater lakes in the world and a defining feature of the region’s landscape. Its clear water, backed by forested hills and mountains, gives the shoreline a scenery quite different from the plains and craters associated with northern Tanzania.

The lake’s clarity and rich fish life make it a rewarding destination for snorkelling, with hundreds of colourful cichlid species found nowhere else. Fishing villages dot the shore, and canoe trips offer a close-up view of both the lake environment and the communities who depend on it for their livelihoods.

Lake Tanganyika is typically visited in combination with Gombe or Mahale Mountains National Park, both reached by flight into western Tanzania. Its remote setting rewards travellers seeking a quieter, water-based counterpart to the classic savannah safari.
