Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 m, rising within Arusha National Park just west of Kilimanjaro. Its dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater, ash cone and sharp summit ridge make it one of the most scenic climbs in East Africa.
The Momella Route climbs through montane forest where giraffes, buffaloes and colobus monkeys are often seen, before reaching moorland and the exposed summit ridge to Socialist Peak. Climbs usually take three to four days and are accompanied by an armed park ranger because of the wildlife on the lower slopes.
Mount Meru is reached by a short drive from Arusha, and is often climbed as an acclimatisation trek before Kilimanjaro or combined with a safari in Arusha National Park.
